An Overview of Aquaculture Farming in India

In the last couple of decades, India has witnessed a tremendous upsurge in aqua farm and shrimp business. Though we might still be behind the league from countries such as China, Taiwan, and Indonesia, the current market trends show that the industry is on the upward curve. Thanks to the industrial giants including the likes of KCT Group coming to the forefront in shrimp farming and aquaculture business, this industry in India is once again revived.

In the past 10 years, fish production in India has been doubled and brackish water aquaculture farming has been introduced in many areas. While Indian shrimp farmers are more or less familiar with freshwater farming, brackish aquaculture farming is a new concept for them. This kind of shrimp farming entails breeding of sea bass, grey mullet, tiger shrimp and mud crabs. Interestingly, both local and big industrial giants are adopting it as it promises to give better yields.

Boasting a coastline spanning over seven thousand Kilometer, India definitely happens to be a hotspot for shrimp farming business with giants such as The Waterbase Limited taking the league. Currently, our country has suppliers in more than 75 countries and the business is only likely to grow.

Though the states of West-Bengal, Lakshadweep, and Andaman have been a major hub of aquaculture farming from the pre-colonial era, there are new players in the market that have thoroughly boosted its growth. It is astounding how Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a major leader in fish production race and handles 40% of marine exports of India which includes mainly freshwater and coastal aquaculture.

Since we have already mentioned that West Bengal is one of the prime locations in our country for shrimp production, it obviously happens to acquire a large part of the business. Involving more than 14 million people under its umbrella, aquaculture business in this region not only provides production but also offers great employment opportunities. This one state alone amounts to a turnover of 1500 crore every year.

Yet another emerging state in the business is Chhattisgarh, which boasts a good number of irrigation tanks, village ponds, and reservoirs. The opening of shrimp farms has specifically benefitted people from scheduled tribes and caste by opening avenues of various employment opportunities. Currently, the state has around 1.549 lakh hectares of aquaculture area which in itself is remarkable for the business.
