Myths about Wind Power

With the power of saving the environment from apparent decline, comes the responsibility of proving the naysayers wrong. That is exactly what all the sustainable energy alternative companies are thinking. With the depletion of the world’s natural resources like coal and petroleum which were the usual choices for generating energy and powering various essential parts of our lives, the world turned to other resources that could sustain its lifestyle without compromising the environment.

While different sources like solar energy, wind energy and hydropower have made up for the shortcomings that the fossil fuels are facing, there are still a lot of myths that make them look undesirable and unreliable. Wind energy especially has been questioned about its infrastructure, noise levels and its overall impact on the environment. Here are a few myths that are prevalent in today’s world.

Turbine Noise is a Health Hazard

This is untrue as the development in wind farm technology has rendered the wind mills almost silent. The mechanical noise which mostly stems from the movement of the rotors has almost no sound at all because most of the wind mill manufacturers ensure that they stick to the emission guidelines which have regulated the amount of sound a windmill can generate.

Wind Turbines are Inefficient

While the output of wind energy depends upon the wind that blows at a certain time, the minimum power output is always at a consistency rate of 70-85%. Companies like Suzlon and KCT’s wind energy division called KCT Renewable Energy have worked consistently to ensure that yearly load factors exceed that of the power stations. It is on track to trump the theoretical to practical output ratio of power stations in the next few years itself.

Wind Energy is Expensive

Wind energy is one of the most affordable and cheap sources of electricity because of the ease at which the source can be found. While deep shaft and deep sea drilling is common to source out coal and petroleum respectively, wind is naturally occurring almost everywhere which makes it an unlimited resource that will never finish. With the prices of fossil fuels increasing because of their demand, wind power is becoming cheaper and is one of the best alternatives to the former. Governments around the world also provide subsidies so that wind energy is adopted on a massive scale which makes it an even better option.
